Chapter Eleven

It was incredibly difficult watching someone you love suffer as you stand by giving them the space they need, but that's the situation Ezekiel and Ember found themselves in. Eden and Eason’s pain was visible and all-consuming, yet Ezekiel and Ember understood the necessity of giving Eden and Eason the opportunity to grieve the way they needed to.

“Are you ready?” Eason asked as he and his sister separated.

“Sort of,” Eden answered, lifting her hand and wiping the tears away. “But there's a part of me that doesn't want to leave them, not again.”

“I feel the same way sis,” Eason replied. “But we're not leaving them. They are always with us. If we haven’t learned anything else in coming here, in coming back, we've learned that.”

Eden took one last look at the place where their parents rested. A part of her really didn't want to go. She had felt a kind of connectedness to their parents that she hadn't felt since the last time she saw them. But there was also a part of her that recognized that what Eason said was true. Their parents would always be with them, carried in their hearts and in their spirits, a constant reminder that they were never alone. And as Eden took one last look and uttered one final parting salutation, she was finally ready to walk away. They moved collectively in the direction where Ember stood. Eden looked around as she didn’t immediately see Ezekiel. She didn't immediately panic, but her eyes did scan the space to see if she could locate him. She needed to be comforted by him, and she needed him there with her. There was a tremendous amount of relief when she saw him just a few hundred feet away. Eden started walking in that direction, and when Ezekiel recognized that she was coming his way, he met her.

“Where did you go?” Eden asked as Ezekiel fell in step next to her.

“Nowhere in particular,” Zeek replied. “I was just walking. Are you all ready to go?” He asked.

“Yes, we're ready,” she answered.

Jordan stood next to the limousine awaiting their return. As they approached, he opened the back passenger doors and then closed them after his party was inside. The ride back to the hotel was nearly as quiet as the ride to the cemetery had been.

“What's the matter, love?” Ezekiel asked, noticing the look on Eden’s face. He didn’t want to pry, but he did need to check in with her.

“I had no idea they didn't have a headstone,” she answered. “That's bothering me. We need to do something about that,” she mused.

“We definitely need to do something,” Eason commented.

“Fortunately, now especially, we're in the position financially to take care of it,” Eden replied.

“I will do some research and find out how we can get the situation remediated as soon as possible,” Eason said. “They are more than just a plot number. They are our parents.”

The couples returned to the hotel, retiring to their separate rooms.

“How soon are we leaving?” Eden asked, and she sat down on the bed.
